Marshmello has been everywhere in the past few years. He is nominated for Song of the Summer at the 2022 VMAs, which are taking place tonight. And, of course, everyone has been frantically searching Google to find out what Marshmello looks like in real life. You know, under that big marshmallow mask with the big smile?
We did a deep dive, and *drumroll, please* we found THE ANSWERS YOU SEEK. Just keep in mind that Marshmello hasn’t officially confirmed who he is, even though it’s 99.9% clear who he is, so take all of this with the tiniest pinch of salt.
Who is Marshmello?
Marshmello is one of the most well-known people in the music business, even though his face is always covered. He has made a name for himself in the music world. If you ask us, marshmallows go well with hot chocolate, but right now we’re talking about a different marshmallow who wears a big helmet.
What is Marshmello’s Occupation?
Marshmello’s real name is Christopher Comstock. He works as a DJ and makes electronic music in the United States. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States, on May 19, 1992. When we talk about his style of music, we mean electronic dance music with a lot of synths and bass. Moe Shalizi is in charge of him.
When Did Marshmello Enter the Public Eye?
In 2015, the 29-year-old released his first original song, Wavez. At the beginning of 2015, he put the song on his SoundCloud page. After that, he put out remixes of songs by the American DJ duo Jack Ü and the German-Russian DJ Zedd.
He kept putting out music, and after a while, other artists began to notice him. Skrillex first noticed him and helped him out by reposting one of his songs called “Find Me” on SoundCloud.
Marshmello is Probably Dotcom (Aka Chris Comstock)
For a long time, nobody knew who Marshmello was. In 2017, it was found out that he is DJ Christopher Comstock, who also goes by the name Dotcom. The “UNMASKING” happened in part because Skrillex posted a video on May 19, 2016, to celebrate Marshmello’s birthday. Which, uh, just so happens to be Christopher’s birthday.
Then, on November 14, 2017, Forbes said they could “conclusively report that they are the same person.” They did this by pointing out that Marshmello is on Dotcom/Christopher Comstock’s management roster and that Marshmello’s holding company lists Christopher Comstock as the manager. The news outlet also talked to people who didn’t want to be named, and they confirmed that Chris Comstock = Dotcom = Marshmello.
Impressive detective work, but to be honest, there were also clues back in 2015, when Katie Couric was interviewing Skrillex and he got a phone call in the middle of it. Katie thought, “It sounds like Chris,” and Skrillex said, “Oh, Marshmello.”
ANYWAY, if Marshmello is Dotcom/Chris Comstock, it’s not hard to find pictures of him because he doesn’t wear a mask and has an official Instagram account.
Do Not Anticipate Him to Remove the Mask
No matter how sure the internet is, Marshmello isn’t going to say for sure or rule out who he is. “I don’t take off my helmet because I don’t want or need fame,” he wrote on Twitter. I’m really trying to make something good that people can relate to… The helmet turns me and you both into Marshmello, so we’re all Marshmello.”
He also recently told the Recording Academy that Shockwave, where Marshmello uses his own voice, is “not really about following a person around and watching everything they do. It’s just hearing the music, seeing the helmet, and hearing what I say, which is fine, but I don’t think it’s about who I am.”
Forbes asked his manager, Moe Shalizi, why he chose to stay anonymous. He said, “For us, it was about how do you make a brand that everyone can relate to and is accessible to everyone. The idea we had for Mello was, “How do you make a character that everyone can relate to?”
I mean, a lot of DJs before Marshmello never took off their masks either, so he’s in good company! (Note: The duo Daft Punk is probably the most well-known group to wear masks on stage, though there are also photos of them without masks.)
Trolling People is One of His Favorite Passtimes
Marshmello has done a lot of fake reveals over the years, but my favorite was when he got Shawn Mendes to pretend to be him at the 2018 iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards.
It’s Profitable to Wear a Mask
Marshmello has made a fortune as a DJ without ever disclosing who he is. According to Celebrity Net Worth, he has amassed an incredible $40 million through various performances and tours.
According to Forbes, Marshmello’s helmet weighs in at just eight pounds but costs $55,000 due to its advanced features like an air conditioning system and customizable LED lighting.
